From comments we have received, it seems that there is some confusion regarding the difference between Federal student loan consolidation and private loan consolidation.

Federal loans, such as Stafford Loans should be consolidated at http://www.loanconsolidation.ed.gov/ - NOTE there are now Special Direct Consolidation Loans announced by the Obama Administration.

Private student loans can only be consolidated with other private loans. In other words, Federal and Private loans can not be consolidated together.
